Taunus

I took a little trip to see Taunus mountain which is known among motorcyclists for its enjoyable road.

Unfortunately again I realized that most roads that are suggested for “bikers” often are the ones where you can drive fast and lean into corners. That’s not what I am looking for. I prefer interesting scenery and challenging terrain.

There are three big motorcycle categories and usually (I’m massively generalizing) rider personalities. Racers, cruisers and adventurers.

Racers prefer these kinds of bikes:

They are obviously made for speed. The downsides are that they are often not the most comfortable for long distances, they have to stick to smooth tarmac and they don’t have any luggage space.

Cruisers:

This category generally offers the greatest riding comfort. Some offer luggage space, some don’t. They are also mostly only made for the road. Long distances are no problem.

Adventure bikes:

They are either called adventure bikes or dual sport bikes. The reason being they are capable of driving on the road and off it. The idea is that you can go anywhere and no condition should hold you back. Hence the “adventure”. They usually offer plenty of luggage space and are comfortable (enough) for driving long distances. Things like knobby tires don’t really help with riding comfort on long distances on the highway. Same goes for an upright riding position which is desirable for riding offroad but that’s the nature of merging two world together. Finding a balance between each element with different purposes.

Needless to say I was happy when I found a few hundred meters of “proper” unpaved road:

At the top of the mountain there was a nice view and I took a little break before heading home.
