When I woke up I finally saw where I had ended up. I was still on earth. There was no human life though as far as the eye could see. Just flat dust.
I had a little breakfast and got back onto the road for a short half hour drive to my next destination. The Bonneville Salt Flats International Speedway. Next to the salt lake I visited the previous day there are wide flat areas covered in salt. I assume that there used to be shallow lakes there too. These flat areas are as smooth as tarmac and that makes them perfect for racing. The Bonneville Salt Flats International Speedway is host to racing drivers and car manufacturers testing their vehicles trying to set new land speed records. Most speed records of all kinds of wheeled vehicles have been set here.
Some areas collect moisture which can create large puddles.
It’s a thick heavy soup similar to crushed ice in water but luckily unlike the salt lake it’s very clean. No bugs and no smell.
The salt crystals really are just the same as you buy in the grocery store to put in the salt grinder. In fact not surprisingly grocery stores in the area sell Salt Lake City Salt.
At a gas station I was told that because of the moisture it was not advised to drive on the salt at this time of year but I didn’t come all this way to not at least give it a try.
Surprisingly the ground was a bit moist.
I had put the the bike on the kickstand to take a picture and as soon as I released the weight to let the bike rest on the kick stand I knew it was going to sink in tip over in a few moments. But I had to get my pictures.
The bike was heavy but the sand gave good grip and lifting up the 450 pounds was surprisingly easy.
On the bike the faster I drove the better the handling was because I didn’t give the wheels time to dig in.
I didn’t have any water with me so I decided to not overdo it as I didn’t want to walk back to civilization without water if I had a breakdown.
Back on the road heading west to Nevada my first stop was at a car wash to get all the salt off …
.. my cloths …
… and the bike.
The rest of the day was spend driving through Nevada covering some distance before I would change my heading for the last time going north Canada.
